โ€œWhat Was Your Name, Again? (@wwyournameagain)โ€ is a documentary photography project by Sol Shin exploring the politics of naming through collaborations with diaspora communities in Berlin. The exhibition brings together collaborative photographs and personal stories that reflect on migration, stereotypes, and everyday experience of being seen as โ€œthe Other.โ€

Sol is a documentary photographer based between Seoul and Berlin. Her practice explores the moments when language fails us and when individuals are compelled to reshape themselves to fit societal expectations. In this talk, sheโ€™ll introduce the ideas behind โ€œWhat Was Your Name, Again?โ€ and discuss how collaboration can challenge stereotypes and create new ways of representing identity.

Nga is a German of Vietnamese heritage who has lived in Berlin all her life. She calls Berlin her true home. She will talk about how she has navigated prejudice and microaggressions that come with being perceived as โ€œdifferentโ€. She will also share how she has used these experiences as opportunities for growth, and reflect on the long journey of learning to stay soft on the outside.

She is a Korean American, born and raised in rural Oregon, now living in Berlin. Being raised in both American and Korean cultures, she often found herself feeling like an outsider to both. She is deeply interested in exploring identity and belonging, the social constructs that perpetuate othering. She will reflect on growing up in the United States, share her experiences of othering and everyday microaggressions, and explore how these experiences can become opportunities for connection, understanding, and resilience.

Juyoung is a Software Engineering Lead from South Korea, living in Berlin since 2018. Her experiences of adapting to life in Germany have shaped the way she thinks about identity, belonging, and everyday interactions across cultures. In this talk, she will share her experiences of everyday microaggressions and the ways she has navigated them. She believes that sharing personal stories can open the door to greater understanding and empathy. She also hopes to connect with others by sharing her personal experiences.
