Affirmation book “There is room for me!” with text and illustrations by Mariela Georg

MHAS is delighted to host the book launch of Mariela Georg’s newly-published children’s book, There is Room for Me! (2022).

Those of us from a certain generation know that, when we were growing up, we hardly read any children’s books that contained depictions of ourselves, of children with our skin color that shared the daily experiences that we did. Nowadays, especially in more “progressive” or hipster neighborhoods, it is common for bookstores to sell “anti-racist”, affirmative children’s books. Nevertheless, it is important to support BIPoC* authors directly and to create spaces for them to present and discuss their work on their own terms. MHAS is especially happy, therefore, to be hosting this book presentation and mini-workshop, wherein Mariela Georg will share some of her thoughts around why books like There is Room for Me! are so important and what the goals of this book are within the larger context of empowerment work for BIPoC parents, teachers, nursery assistants and childcare workers.

Mariela Georg has been a freelance empowerment trainer for people with experiences of marginalization since 2017. A special focus of her work is dealing with stress and tools for stress regulation from the fields of psychology, mindfulness practice and bodywork. In her empowerment work with adults, Mariela noticed that most of her workshop participants have had negative self-perceptions since childhood and adolescence. Many of these negative thoughts are due to racism and other oppressive systems. As the mother of a three-year-old child, Mariela came up with the idea of illustrating and publishing a children’s book that conveys positive self- affirmations. This resulted in the book “There is room for me!” (German orig. title “Es ist Platz für mich da!“), which was published in March 2022.

On September 24th, 2022 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., Mariela will present this affirmation book for BIPoC* children. “There is room for me!” – Every child has the right to say that, because there is room for every child on this earth!

The book presentation will be a short workshop for BIPoC* parents and BIPoC* practitioners. The participants are introduced to the topic of self-affirmation and will acquire practical tips on how children can be empowered through books such as There is Room for Me!

Signed copies of the book will be available for purchase at the event!
