As a response to, and engagement with, Lizza May David’s painting installation that is part of the group exhibition “As We See Us: A Decolonial Salon des Refusés”, sound artist Anjeline de Dios will perform a version of her work-in-progress, “Speak, My Language”. Expanding on David’s visual meditations that complicate colonial narratives of memory and migration, De Dios’ work sounds out the in/visibility of the voice, at once informed by her research on the musical labor of overseas Filipino musicians and her own experience as an artist-scholar outside of, yet tied to, her homeland. Through chant compositions, non-linear movements, and moments of collective sounding with the audience, she poses as inquiry and possibility the ‘sonic care work’ of hearing (for) oneself as well as others.
